In 2010, a major renovation of the course began, and it reopened in 2012. While the routing remained unchanged, the rest of the course was completely rebuilt. The original architect, Rafael Sundblom, had envisioned Sweden’s first American-style golf course, but he passed away during construction, resulting in some deviations from his original plans. I discovered older drawings in a club storage closet, which gave insight into his vision. My approach was to create something in line with his intent while incorporating elements of links-style golf.
When the course reopened in 2012, it became the first in Sweden to adopt this unique design philosophy.
In 2024, a refinement of the plan I developed in 2010 began alongside a major external groundwork project affecting holes 3 and 4. In 2025, this design work will continue across all 18 holes.
The Royal Drottningholm Golf Club was founded in 1959. Initially, the golf course was planned to be located within the palace park, but as the park was not large enough to accommodate 18 holes, land was secured on the other side of the park for its construction.
